Records Bureau

Canton Public Safety's Records Bureau processes all requests for reports and information. They also process all handgun purchase permits, personal clearance checks, and fingerprint requests. Applicable fees may apply (listed below).
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests
The Records Bureau accepts FOIA requests for Public Safety Department information in person, my mail, fax or online. Requests are processed within five business days, as allowed by law. Requests should contain as much specific information as possible regarding names, dates, times, locations, etc. FOIA fees are based on an hourly labor rate, search and copy fees, and per page fees.
Note: All Fire reports and Environmental Assessment reports must be submitted by FOIA request. EMS reports requested by anyone other than the patient must be by FOIA request, along with a signed medical authorization by individual treated (per HIPPA). Otherwise requester must be legal guardian or next of kin.

Handgun Purchase Permits | $5 Notary Fee | Apply between 8:30 am - 4 pm Monday - Friday. Permits are valid for 30 days. |
Clearance Letter | $10 each | Obtain in person, between 8:30 am - 4 pm. This is a local clearance only. |
Notary Public | $5 each | Notary Public services are offered for all documents that are issued by or obtained from the police department. |
Concealed Pistol License Permits (CPL) | Applications for CPLs are processed by the Michigan State Police. Applications are available online at www.michigan.gov/firearms. |
*Accident reports may also be obtained online (applicable fees will be assessed through CLEMIS).
